“In a Lonely Place”
Today, one from a Norwegian naturalist..
This oil on canvas painting, titled “In a Lonely Place”, is by the Norwegian artist, Amaldus Nielsen, from 1901. Nielsen was associated with the Naturalism art movement and is often recognized as the first naturalist painter in Norway.
The setting of this scene is the mountain of Hoven, north of Mandal in western Norway. It was in this part of the country where Nielsen was born and raised, and where he returned to paint after completing his art education.
Beginning in the 1860s, Nielsen sketched his studies outdoors, en plein air. This allowed him to pay close attention to the light and atmospheric qualities of his landscapes. Most of his landscapes depict areas in southern and western Norway, near his home. He would walk for miles to destinations when the light was just right to paint the wilds of his home in all its natural glory.
“In a Lonely Place” is in the Fine Art Collection of the National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design, in Oslo, Norway.
