George Barbier

George Barbier was a French illustrator and designer who lived from 1882 to 1932. Barbier was associated with the Art Deco movement though his style was really a blend of several influences.

Barbier was born in Nantes along the Loire River in Western France. He had his first show in 1911 at 29 years old which gave him many new patrons and supporters. Barbier was very popular in his time and was commissioned to work on a variety of styles and mediums. He created posters, books, fashion illustrations, and costumes. Barbier was a favorite among the haute couture fashion world of Paris and illustrated many of their clothing advertisements.

His works are recognizable by their bright colors, bold lines, East Asian and Persian influences blended with the couture fashion of Paris. They were seen as bold and slightly scandalous in their day. Barbier died in 1932 at just 50 years of age. When he passed, he was at the top of his career.
