Viktor Vasnetsov
Viktor Vasnetsov was a Russian artist who lived from 1848 to 1926. Vasnetsov was a man of many talents, including painting, architecture, and designer. He came to notoriety for his works on Russian mythology, history, and folklore, combining history and mythology with symbology.
Vasnetsov was born in Lopyal, Vyatka, Russia, about 750 miles west of Moscow. His father was a priest, and his grandfather was an icon painter. At ten years old, Vasnetsov entered the Vyatka Seminary, where part of his studies included assisting an icon painter in a local shop. This was a formative experience in Vasnetsov’s life.
In 1867, Vasnetsov moved to Saint Petersburg to pursue an art education where he started at the Drawing School of the Society of the Encouragement of the arts. In 1868, he entered the prestigious Imperial Academy of the Arts. At school, he met and befriended fellow artist, Ilya Repin. Vasnetsov did well in school, and in 1870, he won the Academy’s prestigious Silver Medal for his piece, “Christ and Pontius Pilate Before the People”. In his early career, Vasnetsov’s art focused on genre pieces, depicting domestic scenes and daily life.
In 1878, Repin invited Vasnetsov to join the Peredvizhniki art movement that was challenging the traditional academic approaches to art. This cooperative created mobile exhibitions which toured the countryside and referred to themselves as “The Wanderers”. The most common subject of Peredvizhniki art was the Russian landscape. They sought to draw attention to the beauty of their own backyards. They were the Russian counterpart of the Realism movement happening in France at the same time. This group included such talented artists as Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Arkhip Kuindzhi, and Konstantin Bogaevsky.
By the 1880s, Vasnetsov shifted his art subjects to Russian folklore, history, and nationalism, where he masterfully combined realism with romanticism and symbolism. It is because of this, that he is known as the founder of the “Russian style” of art. It is for this period of work, where he blended Russian culture with folk art, that he is most remembered.
Viktor Vasnetsov dies in 1926 at 78 years of age.
