“Girl Reading”

For today, a look at a rare portrait from the landscape artist, Camille Corot.

This sweet and lovely oil on canvas painting is by the French artist from the Barbizon school, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, or simply Camille Corot. It is titled “Girl Reading” and dates to circa 1850 to 1855. Corot made several trips to Italy to study the art of the masters. The model in this painting is wearing one of the Italian dresses that Corot brought back with him.

Typically, Corot was known for his landscape pieces. His portrait paintings like this were few and far between. Corot did several paintings along the same theme of women reading between 1850 and 1870. Most of the models that he used in the portraits that he did paint were women. These paintings appear to have been made for more of his own private study and endeavors. Corot never exhibited them publicly until he was in his 70s.

Girl Reading” is currently in the collections of the Kunst Museum Winterthur in Winterthur, Switzerland.
