“Reveries”

This dreamy oil on canvas piece is by the American artist and illustrator, Maxfield Parrish, from 1913 and is titled “Reveries”. This is one of several pieces by Parrish of the same name. In this version, Parrish depicts a woman sitting dreamily on a swing. This has the signature blue and gold colors and overall Utopian feeling that Parrish is known for.

As an illustrator, Parrish created his paintings with the knowledge that they would be mass produced. His paintings, with their bucolic nature, fantastical backgrounds, and classically clad subjects, were highly popular. So Parrish created a slew of paintings along the same theme knowing that the general public would purchase prints. Which they did and in mass quantities.

Reveries” is currently in the collections of the National Museum of American Illustration in Newport, Rhode Island.
